THE STORY OF INK & TAILOR
Ink & Tailor blends art and apparel, transforming a static image, a captured moment, into fluid works of art meant to be draped, wrapped and worn. It gives a new perspective to the mundane, elevates the ignored and celebrates all that’s beautiful, in often unexpected ways.
Each piece is inspired by everyday haunts, and favorite travels; the colors, composition and stories told. In a world of different perspectives, Ink & Tailor tells visual stories, sharing an interpretation of life captured through the lens of a camera, creating wearable works of art.
MAYA VON GELDERN
A creative soul with a love of photography, travel and artistic exploration, Maya von Geldern co-created Ink & Tailor, with the idea of telling stories through photography, bringing moments caught in time back into motion... giving them new life. Maya now owns and runs the company on her own, from Portland, Oregon, a city rich in art, architecture and nature, that provides even more inspiration for her work:
"Born and raised in Hawai'i, in a family of artists and designers, I always knew that I wanted to be an artist when I grew up, but I had a hard time narrowing down my areas of interest... fashion design, photography, textiles, graphics. It turns out that Ink & Tailor would end up combining them all!
I majored in Glass Blowing and Jewelry/ Metal Arts at California College of the Arts, in Oakland; studied Art History and French/ Italian language at the Sorbonne, in Paris, France and the Scuola Leonardo da Vinci in Florence, Italy; and then received my BFA in Fashion Design from Otis College of Art and Design, in Los Angeles.
Aside from my family's creative influence, and an extensive education in the arts, I've found that a lifetime of travel has been the greatest source of inspiration and new forms of expression. It's amazing how connecting with people around the world has an evolving effect on who I am and in which direction my creativity flows. So, my career path has been just as varied as my education.
I've worked as a fashion and jewelry designer in the U.S. and Italy. I've taught fashion design to high school and college students. I've worked as an event coordinator, from weddings to wrap-parties. In a seemingly constant appreciation for change and growth, I closed the doors on my photographic-based jewelry line gallery by maya von geldern, and with a baby on my hip launched Ink & Tailor.
Being a work-from-home-studio mom of two is my biggest point of pride. It's how I was raised and what I always wanted for my future, though probably a lot harder than I ever expected!"
Oh, the stories yet to be told...
